Powering Our Transition to Net Zero
With an ever-growing demand for electricity due to the UK’s 2050 net zero target, numbers of electric cars due to hit the roads are rising and more than half a million heat pumps are planned to come online in the next 5 years. To respond to these changes, National Grid is adapting its strategy to enable a smooth transition to clean energy.
Part of the team’s plan is an investment of more than £6 billion to modernise their network. This money will allow them to update the grid to connect clean energy sources and feed in community energy generation.
Their ultimate goal is ambitious. They are committed to a vision for a fossil-free future and plan to be net zero by 2028, well ahead of current UK targets. They have already decarbonised Great Britain’s electricity system by 61% and reduced their scope 1 & 2 emissions by 65% since 1990. In addition to decarbonising the network, they are working to reduce waste and promote biodiversity on their sites.
Security is another high priority for National Grid, who is dedicated to providing a reliable, consistent energy supply to keep hospitals, transport networks, schools and homes running seamlessly.
About The National Grid
National Grid manages the transmission of energy, delivering electricity safely, reliably and efficiently to the customers and communities they serve – all while working towards a clean energy future.
As the demand for low carbon technologies grows and customers become more invested in their energy usage, they expect more from their network provider. That’s why National Grid has become the first network operator to make a connectability pledge, promising its customers that network capacity will never be a barrier to the adoption of domestic low carbon technologies.
